Manager, Impact Management & Research

This is a full-time, hybrid (3 days/week in office) role based in New York City.

The Impact Capital Managers (ICM) mission is to accelerate the performance of our members and to scale the impact investing marketplace with integrity and authenticity. We do this through our membership association, which today includes 150+ funds representing more than $70B in impact-focused private capital, as well as field-building initiatives and partnerships via our affiliated ICM Institute. Our fund manager members have backed 4,000+ innovative private companies and seek meaningful impact and exceptional financial returns. The ICM network of peers is engaged and collaborative by nature. Membership is selective.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW  

The Manager, Impact Management & Research will lead the strategy and execution of ICM’s impact measurement and management (IMM) and research workstreams with a priority of cultivating and supporting best practices among ICM member funds and the wider industry. The Manager will be an ambassador for ICM, developing and sharing our point of view on evolving impact definitions, standards, and methodologies in internal and external settings, and selectively establishing partnerships with peer organizations, industry service providers, and academic institutions. ICM is a small and nimble team; this individual will be expected to drive impact management and research strategies at a leadership level but also engage across other initiatives. The Manager will report to the Executive Director and supervise an Analyst.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES 

Strategy 

  • Lead strategy for ICM impact management and research and position ICM as an influential industry voice on impact management from the private capital perspective; with member and staff input, develop goals and indicators for success

  • Position ICM as an essential, influential industry voice on IMM from the private capital perspective

  • Identify new, mission-aligned IMM product and service offerings for members and potential members, working with partners when appropriate

  • Develop and manage budgets related to impact management and research, with guidance from the Executive Director and the Head of Finance & Operations

Impact Measurement and Management (IMM) 

  • Track and determine ICM’s involvement with key frameworks and organizations in the field (including but not limited to Impact Frontiers, Impact Convergence Forum, SFDR, SDR, Impact Principles, GIIN IRIS+, third-party verification, impact valuation, impact-linked compensation)

  • Support association funds to meet the ICM Fundamentals on IMM and develop processes and frameworks to gauge fund and network progress, leveraging the IMM Working Group

  • Oversee IMM in the membership lifecycle – from vetting, to onboarding, renewal and beyond – working closely with the Executive Director, the Manager of Member Experience, and ICM’s Membership Committee, association Board, and IMM Working Group

  • Spearhead new approaches, tools, and guidance that meet the unique needs of different types of members, balancing the priorities of customization and convergence (e.g. establish best practices for various investment stages, asset classes, and thematic areas)

  • Develop practical, high production-quality guides and resources for members

  • Develop IMM curricula and content for ICM’s Talent & Leadership Development programs (e.g. Mosaic Fellowship)

  • Work closely with the LP Advisory Council on projects and norms related to IMM

Research 

  • Design, lead, and author valuable field-building research projects via the ICM Institute

  • Supervise an Analyst to maintain appropriate data management structures, systems, and processes for research projects

  • Provide strategic input to ICM’s advocacy and policy colleagues when relevant; with Analyst, provide timely and relevant quantitative and qualitative data to support advocacy efforts

  • Manage the use of ICM’s own proprietary data sets and analysis to inform the organization’s annual “State of the Network” benchmarking for members and its annual impact reports, in partnership with the Analyst and the Head of Finance & Operations

  • Steward ICM’s annual Impact Allocator Survey, working closely with the LP Advisory Council

  • Cultivate relationships with funders interested in supporting ICM’s field-building work; write grant proposals and reports

Member Engagement  

  • Design and contribute to IMM and research content, and facilitate member engagement (e.g. panels, workshops, etc.), at ICM’s convenings and events

  • Oversee delivery of timely and relevant IMM and research content for the ICM member portal, newsletters, social media content, press releases, and website

  • Lead the ICM’s IMM Working Group in partnership with member chair(s)

     

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • 5+ years of relevant work experience (including 2+ years managing staff and/or interns) and a bachelor’s degree or equivalent; graduate degree preferred

  • Demonstrated understanding of leading impact and data reporting standards and frameworks for investors and their practical application in the fund manager context

  • Familiarity with impact investing industry organizations and networks

  • Strong understanding of how to use data for decision-making; exceptional ability to quickly absorb information and effectively use data tools and platforms; ability to translate data-driven analysis into accessible, practical insights with a business and investor audience in mind

  • Demonstrated experience with project management

  • Experience with survey design; knowledge of Qualtrics and/or similar platforms

  • Experience with budget management/P&L oversight, preferred

  • Experience using software and project management platforms (e.g. AirTable, Google Drive, DropBox, Slack, CRMs, Monday, MailChimp)

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS 

Impact Capital Managers has offices in Washington, D.C. and Manhattan, NYC. This role is based in our Manhattan office. We operate on a hybrid model (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in-office). ICM offers comprehensive health benefits, a flexible and generous PTO policy, 401k with up to 4.5% employer match, home office tech stipend, and a competitive paid family leave policy. The salary range for this role is $90,000-$110,000, commensurate with experience. Some domestic and international travel may be required (<20%).
